Authentic Original Cricket Bat
Delighted to offer this rare good willow cricket bat by Wisden of London. This bat's wear reflected the items' age and history.
John Wisden – a.k.a. “the Little Wonder” oe "the Cardinal" – was a well known English cricketer of the mid-nineteenth century. Wisden sold sports equipment from his London store before becoming the publisher of the Wisden Almanack in 1864.
In the 1850's he began selling cricket gear to England's cricket stars through his new company, John Wisden and Co. By 1855, Wisden was regarded as one of the leading multi-sports equipment brands in England. If you are visiting London take a moment to visit the original Wisden shop at 21 Cranbourn Street where the old store sign is still visible.
Wisden grew into a major international sports brand, receiving a Royal Warrant in 1911 as "Athletic Outfitters to the King". With the onset of war the business entered bankruptcy proceedings in 1939, and was eventually acquired by Grays of Cambridge (now Gray Nicolls) in 1970 when Grays stopped using the Wisden brand for bats, but re-established John Wisden & Co as the publisher of the Cricketers' Almanack. John Wisden died in London 5 April 1884.
This antique cricket bat ships from our facility in the United States and ships flat rate within the country.
