An amateur player from England, W.G. had an influence upon cricket that has not met its equal since. Playing from 1865-1909 (that's a record-equaling 44 year career), W.G. captained almost every team he would play on in his historic career. Known as the greatest all-rounder to ever touch the field, W.G. is primarily remembered for ushering in the modern batting era. Being proficient in every form of swing, he would usually open the innings he played in- much to the disdain of the bowlers unlucky enough to face him. This photo depicts him headed to the wickets with bat in hand. The legendary man, and his legendary beard, was commonly seen in this position, and his name now lives on for the history that he made there.
