Spending almost all of his 22 years in the MLB with the San Francisco Giants, Willie Mays is known arguably as the greatest five-tool player to ever live. Mays was born to play baseball and succeed from an early age. At age 16 Willie Mays joined the Birmingham Barons of the Negro American League and in 1950 his contract was bought by the Giants. Mays won rookie of the year in 1951 and his career would never look back. Mays would become the first player to hit 300 homers and steal 300 bases in his career and would make the All-Star game a record 24 times. While Mays was known for his offensive ability finishing his career with 660 home runs, he was no slouch defensively. Willie Mays would win a record tying 12 gold gloves cementing his reputation as one of the greatest baseball players to ever play the game.

In the 1952-1953 season Mays led the Giants to win the pennant and face the Cleveland Indians in the World Series. In game 1 with the score tied 2-2 in the top of the eight with runners on first and second, Vic Wertz came to the plate. Wertz settled in and smoked a towering drive deep into center field. Mays who was playing shall turned with his back to the ball and sprinted it down and made the over the shoulder play known today as "The Catch".
