Voted the most memorable Scottish Number 3. Sandy Carmichael was awarded 50 Scottish Rugby union Caps between 1967 and 1978. He toured New Zealand with the British and Irish Lions in 1971. During an incredibly violent game against Canterbury, Carmichael suffered five fractures of the cheekbone and had to retire from the tour. Incredibly he played until final whistle of the Canterbury game.

Dating all the way back to 1871, the Scottish Rugby Union played their first official game. Since then, the Scots have won the Five Nations tournament fourteen times and have finished as best as third place in the Rugby World Cup. The Scotland National Rugby Union team has definitely established themselves as a world power in rugby over the past century even though they have struggled of late.

The crest of the Scottish Rugby Union team is based off the national flower, the thistle. The thistle according to legend is called the guardian thistle and has helped to play a role in the defense of Scotland against a night attack by Vikings. The attackers would step barefoot on a thistle and shout in pain and agony and this would alert the Scottish defenders of their attack.
