This is a lovely example of an original Nicolls Cricket bat. Made in Robertsbridge from English willow by L.J Nicolls in around 1947. L.J. Nicolls started making bats in 1876 in his workshop in Robertsbridge, East Sussex, England.
Nicolls made the W.G. Grace record breaking cricket bat with which he scored his 100th century and made 1000 runs in May 1894.
Nicolls merged with H.J. Gray and Sons of Cambridge in 1940. The Robertsbridge facility's production was dedicated to the war effort until 1945. This is one of the last pure Nicolls branded bats to have been made, and is therefore a rare find. After the war the two brands were definitively combined to create the iconic Gray-Nicolls identity that we see all over the world today.
This antique cricket bat was acquired in 2018 from a private collection in London, England, by Vintage Sports.com. The bat ships from our facility in the United States.
