Dating back to 1875, the Irish Rugby Union team has slowly cemented themselves into a national contender in international rugby. The Irish hold 14 outright Six Nation Championships, along with 11 Triple Crown victories against the home nations. Although Ireland has recently surged into international rugby union royalty, the early successes of the club were few and far between.
Prior to 1948, the Irish squad had seen little success nationally and had yet to claim a Grand Slam title in the Six Nation Championship. That all changed thanks to Jack Kyle and the 1948 Ireland squad when they defeated Wales to capture their first Grand Slam Title. The 1949 season continued the Irish success with Ireland being Six Nation Champions and Triple Crown winners. The late 1940s and 1950s laid the foundation for the future and helped the Irish in reaching the quarterfinals in all but two Rugby World Cups.
