This sleek all black home alternate jersey that was worn by Associazione Sportiva Roma during the 1934-1935 season truly brings back the history of AS Roma and Italian history.
In the club’s seventh official season, AS Roma finished fourth in the Italian Serie A League and were managed by Coach Luigi Barbesino. Barbesino coached Roma for 5 years from 1933-1937 and then was hired by Venice in 1938 for the same position. AS Roma’s President during this season was Renato Sacerdoti, who ended up resigning after the season ended.
The 1934-1935 season began in turmoil as Roma’s star player, Attilio Ferraris, was sent to city rival Lazio as part of President Sacerdoti’s idea to thin out and rejuvenate the club. Even though the best player was traded away, Roma brought the offensive attack all season long and outscored all Serie A opponents this season despite only finishing 4th in the league table.
Three attack focused players stood out specifically this season for theGiallarossi(The Yellow and Reds). Fulvio Bernadini, an Italian born footballer and coach, played for AS Roma for nine years from 1928-1939. Bernadini appeared in 286 games and scored 47 goals during his career for Roma and also assisted on countless goals during the 1934-1935 season. The two players that Bernadini mainly assisted to was Enrique Guiata and Alejandro Scopelli. Guiata, Argentinian born attacker, scored 27 goals in 29 games for Roma during this season and was an essential part of the club’s success in leading the league with goals scored. Scopelli, also born in Argentina, scored 11 goals this season and was Guiata’s attacking counter-partner. For a season that featured no championships, these three footballers played very important roles for the Italian club.
This one of a kind soccer shirt was worn in honor of the 1930’s Italian government. This shirt worn during this season featured black shorts and a black polo shirt. The shirt also features the circle-shaped crest that was used by AS Roma that features “ASR” in yellow writing and the red background. This crest was only used for 4 years out of the club’s 91 year history.
Putting on this piece of sports history makes you feel as if you were on the pitch with Scopelli and Guiata and a part of the historic club that is Associazione Sportiva Roma.
