Dino Zoff, Gianni Rivera, Paolo Rossi. These are just some of the names that donned the iconic Italian blue during the 70s. European Champions in 1968, the Italians went into this new decade anticipating great things ahead. The 1970 World Cup would bring what some touted as the "game of the century" with Italy's 4-3 victory over Germany in the semifinals, 5 of those goals coming in extra time. But the Italians would fall short losing 4-1 in the final to a Pele-led Brazil side.
Italy would crash out of the 1974 World Cup in the first round and finish fourth in 1978. A decade that started hopeful would end with a team in transition. The old guard would make way for a new generation of players who would carry Italy to greatness in the next decade. Finally in 1982 that Italian blue would be restored to its former glory with its first World Cup title since 1938.
