During the 1960 decade, Vanderbilt Commodore baseball was not to the level they would have hoped. After thirteen consecutive losing seasons and a team overall batting average of only .190 in 1968, the program finally turned around in 1969. Vanderbilt was led by Head Coach Larry Schmittu and was able to record a winning record of 21-18 in 1969.
Coach Schmittu would eventually lead the Commodores to their first two Southeastern Conference (SEC) Division and Conference Championships between the 1971-1974 seasons.
