The 1969 season saw the Golden Gophers cap off their third straight thirty-plus win season. This year also brought their second consecutive Big Ten Championship.
In 1971, future baseball star Dave Winfield burst onto the scene. Winfield was raised in St. Paul Minnesota and earned a full baseball scholarship to the University of Minnesota in 1969, where he played both baseball and basketball for the Gophers. In 1973, he was awarded the College World Series Most Outstanding Player Award.
Winfield remains one of a select few elite athletes in US history to be drafted by MLB, NFL, ABA and NBA teams. In the end, he chose Major League Baseball where he went on to play for twenty two seasons. He was inducted into the baseball Hall of Fame in 2001. With this cap, we partake in the history made by Winfield and so many others.
