The University of Miami's first varsity baseball team was assembled in 1940. The Canes head football coach Jack Harding, was asked to build a team and a respectable program from the ground up. Their first game was played on March 3, 1940, at Miami Field when the Hurricanes beat Newberry, 13–12.
The 1958 Canes squad was led by Head Coach Bob "Whitey' Campbell who produced four straight winning seasons for the baseball team. Before his coaching years, Campbell was an athlete for the school. He became the first person in Miami University history to letter four consecutive years in three different sports: baseball, football, and basketball. Campbell was named the most outstanding athlete after his twenty-five years of being involved with Miami athletics. With this cap, we honor his legacy.
