This beautiful Walter Sanders vintage Italian equestrian image of Il Palio di Siena dates to 1947. The image comes to us from LIFE’s historical archive. This image is digitally printed on archival photographic paper that is suitable for in-home, office, museum or gallery display. Taken by Walter Sanders a war photographer for LIFE during World War II. Sanders continued to photograph for LIFE from 1944 to 1961. The Palio race dates to the 14th Century and is run on sand in Siena’s historic Piazza del Campo. Every year spectators fill the Piazza for Italy’s finest party; the horses and riders must complete three loops of the around the Piazza as fast as possible. The jockeys ride bareback and so injuries are a regular occurrence.
