Some would say the Cosmos were a large contributing factor in soccer's rising popularity in the States. Starting 1977, they would change the direction of the NASL with foreign acquisitions, most famously Pele and Franz Beckenbauer.
But just as they rose, they fell. Pele retired, attendance plummeted, and the hope of the NASL vanished. Not until the modern era has a glimpse of soccer culture been found like that of the Cosmos fans. The fame and name of the team has continued to live on to this day- some 35 years removed from the closing of the NASL, and the name continues on with the modern club under Carlos Mendes.
