Celebrate the heritage of Irish Rugby with this handcrafted vintage leather ball commemorating the history of the Irish Rugby Football Union or the IRFU. Created by Gilbert Rugby using the methods and traditions that reach back nearly 200 years. William Gilbert, the company's founder, made the very first Rugby ball for Rugby school in 1823.
Dating back to 1875, the Irish Rugby Union team has slowly cemented themselves into a contender in international rugby. The Irish hold 14 outright Six Nation Championships, along with 11 Triple Crown victories against the home nations. Although Ireland has recently surged into international rugby union royalty, the early success of the club was few and far between.
Prior to 1948, the Irish squad had seen little success nationally and had yet to claim a Grand Slam title in the Six Nation Championship. That all changed thanks to Jack Kyle and the 1948 Ireland squad when they defeated Wales to capture their first Grand Slam Title. The 1949 season continued the Irish success with Ireland being Six Nation Champions and Triple Crown winners. The late 1940s and 1950s laid the foundation for the future and helped the Irish in reaching the quarterfinals in all but two Rugby World Cups.
The beautifully embossed logo and text champions a team known for its skill and determination. Shipped in its superb wooden presentation case, packed with authentic wood straw, this ball will become a family heirloom. Limited in number, these balls are exclusive to Vintage Sports.com.
