Gary Lineker was a pure goalscorer. There's really nothing else about him that needs to be said. No matter where he went you knew goals were soon to follow. He began at Leicester City in the second division and from '81-'83 he scored 45 league goals helping the side clinch promotion in the latter season. Leceister's first season back in the top flight would see Lineker finish second on the scoring charts with 22 goals, unbelievable for a newly promoted striker. This seemed impossible to beat but the following season he would share the scoring title, knocking in 24 goals in total.
Lineker moved to Everton soon after and while he only spent a year there it was arguably the best season of his career. He was absolutely unstoppable. In 57 matches across all competitions, Lineker scored 40 goals including 30 in the league, easily winning top scorer. He lead Everton to a second place finish that season scoring three hat tricks on the way. Every defender in the league was terrified when they game up against Gary Lineker.
He would cement his place in English football history with his dominant performances in the 1986 world cup. He scored 6 goals in 5 games and was the first English player, and only one of two, to ever win top scorer in the World Cup. He fought through injury wearing a cast on his arm throughout the tournament. Unfortunately, England came up against Argentina and Diego Maradona in the quarter-finals and was defeated thanks to an uncalled handball that lead to a goal and what some call the goal of the century by Maradona.
His performances in the World Cup would lead him to get to play for sides like Barcelona and Tottenham. No matter where he went he continued to score goals both for club and country. He finished as the third highest goalscorer for England and had a grand tally of 330 goals across all competitions.
Own a piece of that legacy with this England Shirt signed by Gary Lineker. Recall his dominating performances in the 1986 World Cup and all the goals he scored for England after it. Remember him scoring 40 goals for Everton and just missing out on league title glory. His legacy was one of unrelenting force and it can rest on your walls for years to come.
