The Durham Bulls moved into their first stadium, El Toro Park, in July of 1926. Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis opened the park with much panache when he rode out onto the field on a real bull! The Bulls played at El Toro Park until 1934, when the team went out of business due to the Depression. In 1936, the Bulls returned to El Toro Park, which was renamed Durham Athletic Park following a fire which destroyed much of the old venue. In 1968 the Bulls merged with Raleigh to form the Raleigh-Durham Mets, but the team folded just four years later.  Sadly, there would be no professional baseball in the Triangle until 1980. In 1987 Kevin Costner, Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins appeared in the movie "Bull Durham," which is filmed primarily in Durham. The movie's release in 1988 made the Durham Bulls one of the most recognized baseball teams in American history. The Bulls' snorting bull was originally used as a prop for the film but remains a key element in Bulls' history to this day.
