Bob Feller began his Major League career in 1936, at age 17. During his rookie season Feller was named “Rapid” Robert by his fellow players. A true American hero, Feller ditched his draft deferment status to join the US Navy the day after Pearl Harbor was attacked in December, 1941.
According to league records, he was the first MLB player to enlist in World War II. Serving as Chief Petty Officer on the USS Alabama, Feller gave up four playing years. After his return he played a total of 18 seasons for the Cleveland Indians and helped the Indians win a World Series title in 1948. Feller was an eight-time All-Star, He was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1962. We were drawn to Feller because of his selfless service and the fact that he had served aboard the USS Alabama. But as we explored his life we understood that Bob feller was an exceptional member of ‘Greatest Generation’.
