Billie Jean King is a former American tennis player and has been regarded by many as one of the greatest tennis players of all time. Billie Jean won 39 Grand Slam Titles during her illustrious career including 12 singles titles, 16 women's doubles titles, and 11 mixed doubles titles. Of her 12 singles titles, 10 of those were won at Wimbledon (six titles) and the US Open (four titles). King is originally from Long Beach, California and frequently represented the United States of America at the Federation Cup and the Wightman Cup. King won the Federation Cup seven times and the Wightman Cup nine times.
King was told by her parents at the age of 11 that she needed to find a more "ladylike" sport to play instead of softball so she decided to give tennis a chance. Billie Jean ended up saving her own money to buy her very first tennis racquet for only $8 and since then she never looked back.
